ICE in Morocco: what it is, how to obtain and verify it
You see “ICE” on every invoice but are not sure what it means? This 15-digit identifier is essential for invoicing, CNSS affiliation and working with major clients. Here is how to obtain it for free, retrieve it and verify it.

If you are creating a business in Morocco or working with Moroccan companies, you have probably seen ‘ICE’ on an invoice or quote. The ICE, or Common Company Identifier, is now one of a company’s most important numbers: without it, you cannot invoice correctly, affiliate with CNSS or receive payment from major clients.
Yet many entrepreneurs still confuse the ICE with the Tax Identifier (IF), Commercial Register number (RC) or Business Tax number. This guide clearly explains the ICE, the purpose of its 15 digits, how to obtain it for free, how to find and verify it, and how it differs from your other business identifiers.
What is the ICE in Morocco?
The ICE is a unique 15-digit identification number assigned to every company and professional carrying out an activity in Morocco. As its name suggests, it is a ‘common’ identifier shared and recognised by all Moroccan authorities.
Before the ICE, each authority used its own number for the same business: one at the General Directorate of Taxes, another at CNSS, and others at the Foreign Exchange Office or Customs. These multiple identifiers complicated procedures and checks. The ICE was created to bring them together under one reference number.
Introduced by decree and subsequently rolled out, the ICE became mandatory for all businesses. It identifies large public limited companies, SARLs, single-member SARLs, foreign company branches and individual traders alike.
One essential point: the ICE identifies thebusiness as an entity, rather than a particular establishment. A company with several establishments — headquarters, branches or outlets — keeps the same company ICE, supplemented by establishment numbers where needed.
What is the ICE used for and who needs one?
The ICE is used in almost all administrative and commercial business procedures. Specifically, you will need it to:
Issue compliant invoices : your company’s ICE, and often your customer’s, must appear on them.
Register and file declarations with CNSS for your employees.
Carry out your customs transactions (imports and exports).
Respond to public tenders and work with major clients.
Open certain business accounts and services and demonstrate that your activity legally exists.
Who is concerned? All legal entities (SARL, SARL AU, SA, SAS, branches and associations carrying out economic activities), as well as professional individuals : sole traders, regulated professionals and auto-entrepreneurs. In other words, anyone carrying out a declared economic activity in Morocco has an ICE.

Create my companyHow to obtain your ICE free of charge
Good news: obtaining an ICE is completely free. There is no official fee for the allocation of this number. There are two main scenarios.
1. When creating your business — the most common case
When you create a company, a provisional ICE is generated after reserving your company name. When the company is registered, this becomes your permanent ICE.
Felexia Conseils supports the preparation of your company formation in Morocco. You can present your project remotely; the firm then explains the documents, formalities and arrangements suited to your circumstances.
2. For an existing business or an individual
Remember that the ICE is issued only once and does not change throughout the company’s life, even if its address or manager changes.
How to find and verify an ICE
You may need to find your own ICE or check a partner’s before signing a contract or paying an invoice. Here is where to look.
Finding your own ICE
Your ICE appears on several official business documents:
The model J and Commercial Register extracts.
The articles of association and the company formation file.
Your invoices and quotes already issued.
The tax certificates and DGI documents.
Verifying another company’s ICE
To verify a supplier’s or customer’s ICE, the simplest approach is to ask them directly and compare it with their official documents, such as invoices and Commercial Register records. You can also consult OMPIC’s public data, which brings together Commercial Register information for Moroccan businesses. This check helps secure a new business relationship and confirm that your partner is legally registered.
ICE, IF, RC and Business Tax: what is the difference?
This is the most common source of confusion among entrepreneurs. A Moroccan business actually has several identifiers, each serving a distinct purpose. Here is how to tell them apart:
Identifier | Main purpose | Authority |
ICE | A unique identifier shared by all authorities (15 digits) | All authorities (interministerial) |
IF (Tax Identifier) | Filing and paying taxes (corporate tax, VAT and income tax) | General Directorate of Taxes |
RC (Commercial Register) | Registration number proving the company’s legal existence | Commercial court / OMPIC |
Business Tax number (Business Tax, formerly patente) | Identifies the business for local Business Tax purposes | DGI / local authority |
CNSS number | Affiliation and employee declarations | CNSS |
Remember the logic: the RC proves your company’s legal existence, theIF is used for tax purposes, the Business Tax number for local tax, the CNSS for your employees, and theICE ties everything together as the shared identifier. All these numbers are assigned when you create your business.
The ICE on invoices: a legal requirement
Since the ICE was rolled out, including it has been mandatory on invoices. A compliant Moroccan invoice must include the issuer’s ICE, and in B2B practice the customer’s ICE, alongside standard information: date, number, description, amounts excluding and including tax, and the VAT rate.
An invoice without an ICE can cause real problems: your customer may refuse to record it, and the tax authorities may challenge the deductibility of the expense or related VAT. An invoice without an ICE is therefore vulnerable. Include your ICE from your very first invoice.

Explore our servicesCommon mistakes to avoid
These are the mistakes we most often see among new entrepreneurs:
Confusing the ICE with the IF : these are different numbers with different purposes. Using one instead of the other in a declaration causes delays.
Paying to obtain an ICE : allocation is free. Be wary of anyone charging you for this number alone.
Leaving the ICE off invoices : it is a legal requirement, not an option.
Not checking a new partner’s ICE : a quick check helps you avoid dealing with an unregistered entity.
Providing an incorrect ICE : a typing error in the 15 digits can block processing of your administrative documents.
